Definition of Disease: Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis can also cause inflammation of the tissue around the joints, as well as other organs in the body. Arthritis involves inflammation of one or more joints and the breakdown of cartilage which protects the joint, allowing for smooth movement. Cartilage also absorbs shock when pressure is placed on the joint, like when you walk or otherwise bear weight. Without the usual amount of cartilage, the bones rub together, causing pain, swelling, and stiffness.Cause: The cause of rheumatoid arthritis is unknown. Even though infectious agents such as viruses, bacteria, an autoimmune disease (the body attacks itself because the immune system believes a body part is foreign), Broken bone and fungi have long been suspected; none has been proven as the cause. Environmental factors also seem to play some role in causing rheumatoid arthritis.
